Buddha seats on a distant hill

This is a matte painting that I did awhile ago, when I was taking Alp Altiner's class from VFX Workshops. I found some nice photos from google and morguefile and composited them together in Photoshop. I wanted the painting to be somewhat moody but didn't want it to be too dark. So I tried to introduce some light coming in in the foreground. FYI, I absolutely no idea what the chinese letters say in the foreground rocks. Hopefully it's not something that sounds too ridiculous. :)

Below are the photos that I used in the painting. I used whole lot more of small photos but I no longer have them.

And finally the matte painting. I spent about a week and a half before I go to work in the morning.

Concept Painting for VFX Workshops Class

Matte painting class at VFX Workshops has finally started last week. Even though, I took Alp Altiner's class at Gnomon already, it was still packed with good techniques and knowledge. Here's the first assignment that I did for the class. I was kinda being lazy last week. Well, actually I was very busy handling many project at the same time. So I had whip this out in an hour and half. The goal of this particular assignment was to use orange line(indicated below) and come up with an composition. Hopefully it's not too dark for PC users.

The Orchid No. 2

I found a photo on Google image which instantly inspired me to do below image. It was a photo of a building interior looking up from the lobby. As soon as I saw it, I thought about a person discovering hidden old lab of some sort, which haven't being used for a long time. Well, my first impression being said, the idea that I had while I was working on the piece was LOST. :) Being a big fan of Lost, I couldn't stop thinking about Jack and the gang finding another hidden Dharma initiative lab. So, here it is. My version of Lost fan art. I should've putted Dharma Initiative logo somewhere. But I just didn't want to admit that I'm that geeky.

Castle Matte Painting

Here's matte painting that I worked on for fun and to be better. The top photo is the original image that I worked off from. It was provide by Alp Altiner from Gnomon matte painting class, which was super awesome!!! I wanted to do a lone castle that someone still lives in, yet without contact with outside world (as much). I don't know what these people do in the castle, but for sure they make big fire at night time. :D

SketchUp Ships

I saw some cool SketchUp stuff on YouTube and also from someone's website. I thought I would give it a try. After all I'm not a big 3D person and Sketchup is a just right tool for a person who miserably failed in learning Maya. :) It's kinda interesting how Sketchup, Maya and Cinema 4d are all diffrent from one another, yet they're there for the same goal. Building polygon blocks! Oh, wait. Most interesting part of all is, though, Sketchup is made by Google. Nuff said. Here's my sketchup ship. ;)

Manhattan Being attacked by Giant Bugs

I worked on the below images last year. I was assigned to design a creature which would be put in middle of manhattan interacting with people and also illustrate a scene them interacting. Of course, I wanted to design some scary creature attacking people! As you can see from character thumbnails, I had some bad ideas. I like my final idea, though. I'm not too proud to say that I liked the design. But, the idea is scary, at least to me. gross... Enjoy.

Matte Painting Class Assignments

Here are some environment concept paintings that I did for the matte painting class. Mostly painted and photo collaged in Photoshop and I built 3d model for one of the paintings.
It took some hard work to paint these, since I spend 60-65 hours at work and freeways. But the hours that I spent every morning on these before I go to work was the most fun times of last 10 weeks!
Enjoy.
